Matt Gailums, who was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, drove in the game-winning-tally in the sixth after Pat Groome launched a solo homer in the fourth. Newton 13 Sparta 12 Steve Zander was a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate, driving in five runs and scoring twice as Newton edged Sparta 13-12 in a game that went eight innings on Wednesday. Spencer was named the SCIL/Richards and Summers Player of the Week. His teammate, Mike Moore, doubled and singled three times in five at bats, scoring four times while Phil Spence doubled twice for the Braves. Jefferson 6, Wallkill 4 Carson Cooper went the distance, scattering six hits and fanning three as he hurled Jefferson to a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over Wallkill Valley. Cooper blanked the Rangers over the last five innings while his teammates rallied with four runs in the top of the fifth. Vernon 4, High Point 3 Vernon edged High Point 4-3 as Ken Meerendonk pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and whiffing four in picking his first “W” of the season. Pete Tczap singled twice, driving in a run for the Vikings, while Matt Sartel doubled.
