Boys' varsity volleyball team undefeated in division

    VERNON-Seven members of Vernon's boys' varsity volleyball team received all-league and all-area accolades for the 2005 season. Vernon finished the season undefeated (10-0) in Division Three of the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic Boys Volleyball League, and compiled an overall record of 20-4. In addition, coach Jeff DeYoung was named Coach of the Year by the league. In Division Three, Sean Howard, Chris Pomante, and Jeremy Palmieri received first-team honors. Howard, a senior setter and captain, finished the season with 461 assists, 129 digs, 47 kills, 15 blocks, and 13 aces. He was named to the third team Star Ledger All-Area squad. Pomante, a senior outside hitter, finished the season with 164 kills, 98 digs, 24 aces, and 14 blocks. He was named to the second team Star Ledger All-Area squad. Palmieri, a junior opposite, led the team with 176 kills, in addition to 73 digs, 20 blocks, and 8 aces. He was named to the first team Star Ledger All-Area squad. Dave Vitone, Mark Zaremba, and Ken Murphy received second-team honors in Division Three. Vitone, a senior outside hitter, had 138 kills, 26 digs, and 14 blocks. Zaremba, a senior defensive specialist, led the team with 137 digs, and added 11 blocks, 10 assists, 4 kills, and 4 aces. Murphy, a junior middle blocker, led the team with 43 blocks, and added 26 kills and 13 assists despite missing the end of the season due to injury. Senior middle blocker Jeff Woodhouse received honorable mention for Division Three. Woodhouse contributed 25 blocks, 23 digs, and 19 kills.
