Corcoran, Carney lead Pope John at Non-Public A track championships

Sparta. Seamus Corcoran captured gold in the pole vault and Casey Carney earned multiple top finishes as Pope John and Sparta athletes competed in the NJSIAA Non-Public A and Group 2 championships and advanced in lacrosse postseason play.

Seamus Corcoran won gold in the pole vault with an effort of 13-0 and Casey Carney was second in the high jump with an effort of 5-2 to lead the Pope John High boys and girls outdoor track teams at the NJSIAA Non-Public A championships on Friday-Saturday at Buena High in Buena.

Other boys top six place-winners included Daniel Arroyo (sixth in 400-meter dash in 49.95), Ethan Poplawski (sixth in pole vault, 11-6), David Kinney (third in discus, 154-6) and Corcoran (fourth in javelin, 170-6).

The Lady Lions placed overall in the team standings and were also led by Carney (sixth in 800-meter run, 2:20.01), Julia Ireland (sixth in 3200-meter run, 11:25.31), Tessa MacMullin (fourth in 400-meter hurdles, 1:05.29; third in triple jump, 37-1.75; fourth in long jump, 17-1), Kamilla Mizak (third in javelin, 113-11) and the team of Tanya Makhija, MacMullin, Ireland and Carney (third in 4x400 meter relay, 4:04.53).

The final event of the season - the NJSIAA Meet of Champions - was scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at Pennsauken High.

Sparta Outdoor Track

Le-Shem Little placed sixth in the 100-meter dash in 11.16 and was seventh in the 200-meter dash in 23.25 to pace Sparta at the NJSIAA Group 2 championships on May 29-30 at Northern Burlington High in Columbus.

Sparta Boys Lacrosse

Jace Stiansen scored three goals, Marco Aquino added two goals, an assist and five ground balls and Johnny Palmer had two ground balls and won 11-of-19 face-offs as second-seeded Sparta rallied for a 10-7 victory over 15th-seeded Paramus in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Group 2 tournament on May 27 at home.

Sparta (12-5) was scheduled to play host to seventh-seeded Mendham in a sectional quarterfinal on Monday, June 1, with the sectional semifinal round set for June 4.

Against Paramus, Sparta trailed, 7-4, before outscoring its opponent, 6-0, in the fourth period. Eddie Brown added two goals and two ground balls, Michael Pandiscia had a goal, an assist and four ground balls, Brady Shagawat also scored and Eric McCall had eight ground balls while goalie Jake Alliegro made 11 saves.

Sparta Girls Lacrosse

Joey Roque and Reagan Cina each scored three goals, Moira Sweeney added two goals, an assist, two ground balls and two draw controls and Isabella Van Winkle had a goal and two assists as second-seeded Sparta rolled to a 16-1 victory over 15th seeded Paramus in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Group 2 tournament on May 27 at home.

The Spartans (14-2), ranked No. 13 in the state, were slated to play host to seventh-seeded Voorhees in a sectional quarterfinal on Monday, June 1, with the sectional semis set for June 4.
