Depaul crushes Pope John in gridiron opener











SPARTA — DePaul Catholic High School (Wayne, N.J.) defeated Pope John XXIII Regional High School (Sparta, N.J.) in varsity football on Saturday September 1, 2018. The final score was 48-7. The game took place at Pope John XXIII Regional High School.
The DePaul Spartans dominated the Pope John Lions from start to finish. DePaul quarterback Ta'Quan Roberson threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a 40-yard score.
Pope John senior quarterback Niko Hroncich suffered a shoulder injury late in the first half and was wearing a sling on his right arm when the Lions returned to the sidelines for the second half. Pope John freshman quarterback Peter Delaportas stepped in and threw a touchdown pass to receiver Ryan Dengler in the third quarter. Kicker Justin Hertlein added the extra point.
