Field hockey camp coming to Sparta
Sparta — Girls entering grades 4 through 9 are invited to register for the North Jersey Field Hockey Camp running from August 6 to August 9 at Sparta High School. The camp is a great opportunity for girls to learn new skills or refine their techniques.
Each day, players will participate in fun, team building games, offensive and defensive drills, and actual scrimmages to solidify their learnings. The camp is led by Corinne Healy, currently the Sparta Field Hockey JV coach, and Maya Drummond, camp coordinator. Sparta High School’s competitive Varsity field hockey players will also work with the young athletes to enhance their skills through demonstration.
Field hockey is a fast-paced, highly strategic game requiring speed, agility, teamwork, and technical skill. A&C Field Hockey Academy reports that field hockey is played in over 100 countries on five continents by over 3,000,000 people around the world, making it among the three most popular sports in the world, along with soccer and cricket. According to USA Field Hockey, “field hockey sends more athletes to college with scholarships proportionately than any other sport.”
Special guest instructors from Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) will be providing information about collegiate level field hockey and providing individual and group instruction to camp participants. FDU field hockey is a competitive Division III program in NJ with many noteworthy achievements. Just this year, FDU field hockey had 14 players named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad and 2 players were awarded the NFHCA Scholars of Distinction. They are eager to share their insights and enthusiasm for the game.
Corinne Healy is going into her 5th year as the JV Coach for Sparta Field Hockey and was previously a freshman coach at Jefferson. As a resident of this area, she played field hockey for 4 years at Jefferson High School before playing at Castleton University. Her senior year, she helped win the North Atlantic Conference to receive a bid in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Coach Healy has played every position, including goalie, and has worked specifically with the goalies at Sparta. She currently plays on an adult club team on the weekends through the North East Field Hockey Association (NEFHA).
Camp coordinator, Maya Drummond, played Varsity field hockey at Sparta High School prior to graduating in 2013. She also played on the USA Futures team and went on to play competitive club field hockey at Ithaca College. Drummond will graduate Ithaca College in 2019 with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and understands the importance of exercise in childhood development. She is excited to share her love of the sport with the players.
