Giant Gymnastics' cheer clinic a success

Sparks were flying at Giant Gymnastics for their first hosting of The Cheer Leader Magazine’s one day cheer clinic.

With 40 cheerleaders hailing from as far away as Succasunna and Long Valley and as close as Sparta and Newton, the morning session was exciting. Such success has lead Giant Cheerleading coach Jordan Sullivan to schedule another TCLM clinic for April 26.

In the meantime, Giant Gymnastics has a new cheer class on Friday nights. At almost full capacity within the first week, Sullivan is looking to begin another cheer class on Wednesday nights for cheerleaders ages 5 to 7. Giant co-owner Jennifer Packard teaches the class with Sullivan.

The class “focus is on conditioning and flexibility. We go through basics of jumps, cross tumbling and stunting,” explains Sullivan. “It’s good for the kids that don’t get much out of the recreational practices other than going over their routines. We spend time on basic skills because they’re so important.”

According to Sullivan, Giant’s new competition cheerleading team, Fuse All Stars, will begin later this spring. While tryouts for the 2014-15 cheer season are still a few months away, Giant will be offering “Burst” — its third round of what was formally known as their cheer trial program.

Starting on Feb. 5, those who are interested in competition cheerleading but aren’t sure what it’s all about can join the Fuse All Star Burst program. The cheerleaders in Burst will learn a mini routine, and receive an outfit to wear to their final performance. Meeting on Wednesdays for eight consecutive weeks, the Burst program will culminate with a performance for friends and family during the Giant Gymnastics’ Class Olympics on March 29.
