A week ago, college football started. This week, local high schools followed suit as all Sussex County Interscholastic League teams took to the gridiron along with independent Wallkill Valley Regional High School. The big game of the week was between Pope John, which went to the state tournament last year, and Vernon. Playing at home, Vernon lived up to its pre-season ranking of number one in the conference, with a 30-24 victory. It was the first time the Vikings had beaten the Lions since 1994.
