SPARTA — Newton High School defeated Pope John XXIII Regional High School in a field hockey scrimmage on Friday, August 25. The final score was 4-3. The scrimmage took place at Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta.
The win/loss does not count towards the teams record. A scrimmage is an exhibition game and practice match. Like other Sussex County field hockey teams the Newton Braves and the Pope John Lions are engaging in a series of scrimmages before the start of the regular season. The purpose of a scrimmage is to improve the skills of the players. Coaching staff are also able to observe a team's play and make adjustments.
