Pope John defeats DePaul

    Pope John XXIII Regional High School defeated DePaul Catholic High School in girls varsity basketball on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019. The final score was 57-33. The quarterfinal of the North Jersey, Non-Public A Tournament took place at Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta Township, New Jersey.
    Pope John's Kenna Squier scored a game-high 27 points and in the process eclipsed the 2,000 point mark. Squier is only the second female basketball player from Sussex County to score 2,000 points. Newton High School's Linda Cordes, who scored 2,172 points from 1973-77, is the only other female athlete to achieve the feat.
    Squier played her first two years of high school basketball at Sussex County Technical School, scoring 951 points there. As a sophomore, she set a Sussex County record with 51 points in one game. She transferred to Pope John after her sophomore year, and has achieved 1,050 points and counting.
    Alana Robinson and Julia Barracato scored nine points apiece for Pope John.
    Arianna Silva scored eight points for DePaul. Olivia Peiser scored seven points.
    Team records: DePaul Spartans 12-12. Pope John Lions 24-3.
