Pope John wrestling upsets No. 9 Mount Olive
Sparta. Pope John’s wrestlers delivered a signature win over ninth-ranked Mount Olive while local basketball and hockey teams recorded a series of victories, losses and notable individual performances across the week.
Matthew Sutton at 285 pounds, Jacob Campbell at 113 and Dalton Weber at 132 each recorded pinfall victories and the Pope John High wrestling team also picked up bonus points in three other bouts to secure a 41-25 victory over Mount Olive, ranked No. 9 in the state, on Wednesday, Dec. 17 in Mount Olive.
Sal D’Arco earned an 8-5 victory in overtime over Kristian Beres at 126 pounds to give Pope John a 35-25 lead and clinch the team victory.
Other winners for the Lions included Frank Spagnola (decision at 138), Daniel Arroyo (tech. fall at 150), Lukas Katsigiannis (tech. fall at 165), Zach Lombreglia (decision at 175) and Cole Dunham (major decision at 190).
Weber also competed at the 33rd annual Beast of the East Tournament and reached the quarterfinal round at 132 pounds where he bowed to Blair Academy’s Vinny Anello, 8-0.
Pope John Boys Basketball
Trent Houser scored a game-high 12 points, Prince Joshua added five points and three rebounds, Jaedon Crocker had five points and two rebounds and Justin Lilley added five points and one board as Pope John closed with an 11-3 fourth quarter showing in earning a 32-30 victory over Morris Hills on Tuesday, Dec. 16, in Rockaway.
The Lions (1-3) bowed to Albertus Magnus (NY), 66-54, on Saturday afternoon despite a game-high 13 points from Quinn Klebez.
Pope John Girls Basketball
Mia Washington scored a game-high 21 points along with 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block and Natalija Novkovic added 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal to lift Pope John to a 42-39 victory over Chatham on Thursday night in Chatham.
Pope John (2-1) was slated to play Fair Lawn on Saturday, Dec. 27 at Westwood High at 12:30 p.m.
Sparta Girls Basketball
Brooke Shust (18 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, two steals, one assist) and Isabella Vanwinkle (13 points, six assists, four steals, one rebound) keyed the Lady Spartans’ 48-20 victory over Parsippany Hills on Dec. 18 in Parsippany.
Sparta will take part in the Chatham Holiday Tournament and will meet Chatham on Dec. 26 at 5:15 p.m., Madison on Dec. 27 at 4:45 p.m. and Cranford on Dec. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
Sparta Boys Basketball
Leshem Little scored a game-high 23 points and Shane Hoover added 12 points but the Spartans bowed to Delbarton, 65-54, on Thursday afternoon in Sparta.
Little, a senior guard, now has 815 career points for Sparta, which will play Warren Hills in the first round of the Roxbury Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 27 at 4 p.m.
Pope John Ice Hockey
Hunter Parrillo scored twice, Alex Mizak added a goal and an assist and Nicholas Colatrella had two assists as Pope John, ranked No. 9 in the state, earned a 3-0 victory over St. Peter’s Prep on Friday, Dec. 19, at The Rink at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford.
Anthony Conetta earned the shutout with a 13-save effort.
Pope John (2-1) will play St. John Vianney on Monday, Dec. 29, at Skylands Ice World in Stockholm at 8:30 p.m.
Sparta Ice Hockey
The Kinnelon-Jefferson-Sparta tri-op squad suffered its first loss of the season bowing to Morris Knolls, 4-3, in overtime on Friday at Skylands Ice World in Stockholm.
Eddie Brown had a goal and two assists, Michael Pandiscia added a goal and an assist and Ryan Saletto also scored for KJS united, which received 25 saves from Stefan Filewicz.
KJS United (2-1-1) will play Morristown-Beard on Saturday, Dec. 27 at Mennen Arena in Morristown at 4:15 p.m.
