Newton's Cindy DeVries raced to a runnerup finish in her age division of the 26th Annual Sprintin Clinton 2005 5K Run on Sunday evening in Hunterdon County. Sponsored by the Clinton Sunrise Rotary Club, the race started at 6:30 p.m. at the Clinton Community Center Street on Leigh Street. The 22-year-old DeVries crossed the line 35th overall in the field of 262 runners and was fifth among the 86 females in the event. Her time of 20:59 was the second fastest in the women's 20-29 age bracket. Hamburg's Jeff Staple was the leader of the local pack in the Rockaway Summer Blast 5K Run contested Thursday evening. The 30-year-old crossed the line first in the field of 252 runners who completed the 3.1-mile course at Firemen's Field on Beech Street in Rockaway, with a time of 17:42. Wantage's 20-year-old Kelly Kessler was the first local female to cross the line, finishing 22nd among the 88 females in the event. She was timed in 24:11. Sparta's 58-year-old Barbara Hoess was fastest among 55-59-year-old women, posting the gold medal clocking of 24:52.
