Six to be inducted to Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame Nov. 12

SUSSEX COUNTY-The induction dinner for the 2005 inductees of the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame is scheduled for Nov. 12 at the Farmstead Country Club in Lafayette. This is the 30th anniversary of the organizaton, whose first class was inducted in 1976. The addition of the six 2005 inductees will bring the total membership to 153. The new inductees are Mike Caldarella, Linn Crawn, John Gill, Jerry Morelli, Kris Peat and Lou Seville. Caldarella, a 1977 graduate of Newton High School, was nominated for his accomplishments in baseball, coaching and officiating. At Newton he won two varsity letters in baseball and was MVP of the 1977 team. He attended Miami Dade North and County College of Morris, where he continued to excel. He has officiated from 1987 to present in baseball, softball, football and basketball. A 1969 graduate of Newton High School, Crawn was nominated for accomplishments in football, wrestling and baseball. In high school football he was all county in 1967 and 1968; in wrestling, he was district champion in 1968 and 1969, and Newton MVP in 1969; in baseball, he was all county in 1969. After a successfull college athletic career at William Penn University, Crawn signed a professional football contract with the New York Stars of the World Football League in 1974. He has been assistant wrestling coach at Kittatinny Regional High School since 1980. During that period KRHS has won numerous SCIL, sectional, group, state and district titles. Gill was nominated for his accomplishments as a wrestling coach at Kittatinny Regional High School. A 1974 graduate of Binghamton North High School, he graduated from the University of Scranton in 1978. He was assistant wrestling coach at KRHS from 1978 to 1980, and has been head coach since 1980. His career record stands at 324-106-5. His teams have won numerous state, district, sectional, and SCIL titles. During 2005, his team was ranked number one in N.J. by the Star Ledger and Gannett’s N.J. Top 20. Honorary membership Morelli was nominated for honorary membership for his long-time support of sports in Sussex County. He has been present at hundreds of SCIL sporting events over the last two decades and in 1993 created the TV sports program, Sports Beat, featuring Sussex County high-school athletes. A community-minded individual, Morelli assists many local schools and organizations and sponsors a banquet for each high school sports season, honoring the best high school athletes. He is recognized as “the face and voice” of high-school sports in Sussex County. Peat was nominated for his accomplishments as a goalkeeper in soccer. A 1984 graduate of Vernon High School, he attended North Carolina State from 1984 to 1987. In high school he was all SCIL from 1980 through 1983 and all State Coaches Association first team in 1982 and 1983. He was starting goalkeeper for the U.S. National Team Under 18 from 1982 to 1984. At North Carolina State, where he was starting goalkeeper for four years and captain in 1986 and 1987, he holds the record for most saves in a single season with 145 in 1987. Peat played professional soccer for several teams from 1988 until his retirement in 1999. He has been a coach since 1999, and is currently the coaching director for the Atlanta Youth Soccer Association. Seville was nominated for his accomplishments in football and baseball. A 1983 graduate of Sparta High School, he graduated from the University of Delaware in 1988. In high-school football, he held all career rushing and scoring records at Sparta High School, as well as SCIL career rushing and scoring records. He was also a standout in baseball, and was the only player in New Jersey to be selected to both the football and baseball North/South All Star Games in 1983. He was captain of the football and baseball teams and selected athlete of the year at Sparta High School his senior year. In college, he lettered two years at the University of Delaware in football and played on two Yankee Conference championship teams and in three NCAA playoffs. He was the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award in 1988. He currently serves as head coach for Little League football and baseball in Sparta.
