Sparta girls defeat Pope John in softball

— Paige Smith hurled a one-hit shutout to help the Sparta softball team clinch at least a share of the NJAC American Division title with a 9-0 victory over Pope John on Saturday at Pope John XXIII High School.
The win helped the Spartans move to 7-1 in the division. Mount Olive is a half-game back and can clinch a share with a win over Jefferson in its final division matchup.
On Saturday, Smith struck out 11 and also collected three hits and scored three times.
Izzy DeFilippis also had two hits and drove in a pair of runs and Jess Esso had two hits, a run and an RBI for Sparta (19-6).
Maura Brown had the lone hit for Pope John, which dropped to 8-16.
