Sparta Ski Team success; girls take first, boys take second

Sparta - On Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, the Sparta Ski Team had its second Giant Slalom race and the Sparta Girls Varsity Ski Team Won 1st Place and the Boys Varsity Ski Team took second place. Coach Rodney Calafati called Sparta Ski Team's performance on Friday, "Impressive." The Sparta High School Alpine Race Ski Team was eager to race and their times were great. The Girls Ski Team placed first with a team time of 6:42:25. That's more than six seconds ahead of Wayne Valley High School, which placed second. Third was Vernon High School. Sparta's first place finisher was Polina Novozhilova, who placed fourth overall, and Olivia Finkeldie who placed fifth overall. Jillian Stote placed seventh and Rachel Young placed tenth. This week the Sparta Boys Varsity Ski Team placed second, same as last week. Vernon placed first, and Wayne Hills, third. Sparta's Brendan Muhs placed second overall, Joes Russo was ninth, and Tucker Sears placed twelfth, and Charles Flint placed fifteenth.
All four boys junior varsity The Girls Junior Varsity skiiers swept the top four places, with Olivia Calandrillo in the lead. Sean Hargrave and Jack Maraziti finished in the top ten for the Sparta Boys Junior Varsity Team. On Friday, Feb. 1, eight boys and eight girls compete in the Dual Slalom Varsity International race.
