Sparta Ski Team wins second at last race

    The Sparta Ski Team was successful at yet again gaining a place at the podium.
    Coacl Rodney Calafati stated that "the Valentine's Day Slalom race was extra sweet for the Sparta High School Alpine Racing Ski Teams, both the boy and girls varsity ski teams won second place."
    He says it's likely the first time that the Sparta Ski Team placed in every race they entered.
    The team's standings at the end of the regular season; 20 wins and 6 losses for the boys, and 16 wins and 4 losses for the girls. With being over the .500 mark teams to the NJ State Championships at Mountain Creek, a 2-day event with the giant slalom competition at 3 p.m. on on Feb 26, and the slalom race at 2 p.m. on Feb 28.
    Contributing to the boys second place victory at the third slalom race were; Brendan Muhs (1st place overall), Joe Russo (13th), Jack Imgrund (15th) and Tucker Sears (25th overall). Team captain Brendan Muhs had another perfect race and finished 1st place overall for the third slalom race in a row. Leading the Sparta Girls Varsity Ski Team to the second place win were racers Jillian Stote (6th overall), Olivia Finkeldie (8th overall), Polina Novozhilova (9th) and Claudia Calafati (14th).
    The Ski Team participates in the JV Championships at 5 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 21, and at the Petro Giant Slalom Qualifier Race at 2 p.m. on Friday Feb 22. State Championships will take place the following week.
