Staple wins Sparta Road Race

SPARTA-Jeff Staple had the hometown spectators cheering at the finish line as the 29-year old raced through the tape to win the 2004 Main Street 5K Run in Sparta on Saturday. Staple led the field of 347 runners who completed the 3.1-mile course, posting a clocking of 17:32 as he had a 33 second lead over the runnerup, 25-year old Darrel St. Hubbins of McAfee. A USATF-NJ certified race, it is part of the annual festival and business expo. There were 16 local residents who raced to gold medal finishes in their age divisions. Lafayette's 14-year-old Nicholas Beese was the youngest as he posted the winning clocking of 20:19 in the boys' 14 & under age bracket. Newton's 67-year-old William Decker was the oldest, placing first among the 65 to 69-year old men with a time of 29:27. In the 15 to 19 age bracket, Newton's 15-year-old Anthony Santonastaso won in 20:05 while Ogdensburg's 17-year old Samantha Western turned in the first place time of 23:39. Newton's 21-year-old Christian Robertozzi crossed the line first in the men's 20 to 24 age group with a time of 19:08 while Wantage's 29-year-old Heather Goyette posted the winning clocking of 22:32 among the 25 to 29 distaff runners. Sparta's 34-year-old Micheline VonDoehre picked up the first place award among the 30 to 34-year old females with a clocking of 21:54 while Sparta's 36-year-old Thomas Pierson won the men's 35 to 39 competition when he was clocked in 19:15. Newton's 41-year old Michael Gaughean, who finished third overall, was fastest to the finish among the 40 to 44-year old males with a clocking of 18:33. Andover's 45-year-old Linda Heter turned in the fastest clcoking of 23 minutes flat among the 45 to 49-year old women while Sparta's 47-year old Fred Clark won the men's bracket with a time of 20:30. It was a local sweep in the 50 to 54-year old-age division with Sparta's 53-year old Bill Bosman, fourth overall, turning in the winning time of 18:58 and Lafayette's 54-year-old Therisa Campbell winning the women's competition in 25:08. Sparta's 59-year-old Galina Tucker kept the first place trophy of the women's 55 to 59-year old age division in town when she turned in the winning time of 33:31.
