Practice began on Aug. 1 for Vernon Youth Football players, and has followed a tough four-nights-a-week regimen. In spite of the unusually hot weather, practice went on as scheduled. "We just give the kids a lot more water breaks," said Paul Casler, defensive coach for the Super Gold (5th & 6th Grade) team. The Super Gold team's regular season begins on Sept. 10 at home game against West Milford and ends on Nov. 5 with an away game against Sparta. "We play nine games, and at the end we have the championship in Newton where the best teams play, just like the Super bowl," said Casler. Vernon Youth Football is represented by teams form each age group starting at Flag in the first grade, tackle beginning in grade three, and on up to Midget, which includes grades seven and eight.
