State extends property tax rebates deadline

SUSSEX COUNTY-Elderly and disabled homeowners in New Jersey have extra time to file applications for property tax rebates under two state programs. Last week, state officials announced the deadlines for the 2004 FAIR homeowner and Senior Freeze rebate programs were extended to Aug. 15. Both programs had filing deadlines of June 1. Senior Freeze checks are scheduled to be mailed out in mid-July, while checks under the FAIR program are expected to be mailed in early August. Checks for those who file between June 1 and Aug. 15 will be issued as soon as possible, officials said. Under acting Gov. Richard J. Codey's proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2006, only senior citizens and disabled residents are eligible for the FAIR program. The program was suspended for all other residents as a cost-cutting move. But last week, Codey's office announced state revenues were on track to be $1 billion higher than forecast, fueling hopes of restoring the cut. State Treasurer John McCormac is scheduled to present updated revenue figures to lawmakers on Tuesday. Once the state budget for the 12 months beginning July 1 is finalized with the updated revenues, additional rebate applications may be sent out. Eligible homeowners who have not received FAIR applications may file by calling 877-658-2972 or can access applications at www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation. The state has set up a hot line, 888-238-1233, to field questions from senior and disabled residents who have not received applications but believe they are eligible. The FAIR program is the result a merger last year of the NJ Saver and Homestead Rebate programs. Under the Senior Freeze program, the state reimburses elderly and disabled homeowners the difference between the amount they paid in local property taxes in the year they became eligible for the program and the amount of they paid in the reimbursement year. Applicants must meet income, ownership and residency requirements. A hot line, 800-882-6597, has been set up to answer questions about the program or obtain applications.
