Tennis pros come to Mohawk Tennis Club for fundraising classic

SPARTA — Benefitting The Kalidescope of Hope Foundation and Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation, big league players like Jan-Michael Gambill and Justin Gimblestob and other current pros played in the Newton Motorsports Pro Tennis Classic at Lake Mohawk Tennis Club on Sunday, Aug. 10. The crowd persevered through the mixed weather day of beating sun, then drizzling rain while enjoying light banter between the players throughout the matches. Glenn Michibata, current head coach of Princeton University’s Men’s Team and Josh Cohen, 2002 top ranked junior player in the US and current player for Philadelphia Freedoms and Delaware Smash in the World Tennis Pro League squeaked out a win against Colin Dibley, who once held the title for the fastest serve in the world at 148 mph and Nima Rashan, who reached the finals in doubles in an Australian ATP Challenger in 2007. David Goodman served as the announcer of the event. Currently, he is the on-court announcer for the Philadelphia Freedoms of the World TeamTennis Pro League, and iss emcee and announcer for Elton John’s annual World TeamTennis Smash Hits charity event. Jan-Michael Gambill, who formerly held #14 world ranking, Wimbledon Quarterfinalist and was one of People Magazine’s 50 most beautiful in 2000, played a singles match against Morristown native, Justin Gimelstob. Gimelstob has two Grand Slam Mixed Doubles titles with partner Venus Williams. He is currently a leading television commentator and blogger for Sports Illustrated.
