The final list of winning triathletes
SPARTA The Pass it Along Lake Mohawk 2nd Annual Triathlon had a plethora of winners at this year’s event. The results for the triathlon are handled electronically by CompuScore, who provides the racers with electronic ankle bracelets. For relay teams, participants take off the bracelets and pass them to the next racer. “This is a triathlon-sanctioned event where each person wears an ankle bracelet to track their time for each leg,” Pass it Along Event Director Eleanor Young said. “There are timing mats that record the time a participant enters and exits each part of the race.” Racers were broken up into groups according to age called waves. This triathlon had 10 waves of participants. They ran over the timing mats before diving in the water to record the exact time they started their swim. Climbing out of the water they ran over the mat again. This was repeated for each stage of the race. “The most important thing to an athlete is the timing.” Young said. “All the mats are labeled.” The timers keep the time down to the actual swim, biking and running portions of the race so if someone is quicker at changing out of their swim wear and into their bike gear, they are not penalized for taking longer than someone else to change. At the end of the race the participants crossed over the finish line and were greeted by a large digital timer that showed them a time. The time on the clock was set for the first wave of swimmers, so if a participant was in a heat that departed the beach at 7:10 a.m., they knew they had to add 10 minutes to the clock time to get an estimate at their total time. It takes approximately an hour and a half to get the final results from the computer after the racers have finished, Young said. Until then, participants, fans and families enjoyed themselves in Lake Mohawk. “Some people are very competitive not only with each other but with themselves,” Young said. “Others just come out to have a fun day with their families cheering them on.” Here is a detailed list of the results of the Pass it Along Lake Mohawk 2nd Annual Triathlon that took place July 30 in Sparta.
