Newton — Newton Veterinary Hospital, the largest veterinary hospital in Sussex County, will host a free seminar on Trusts and Estate Planning Provisions for Family Pets on Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m. This seminar is open to the general public. Joseph A. Mecca, Esq, an attorney licensed to practice in New York and New Jersey, will be the key note speaker. “For the past 30 years my practice has concentrated in the areas of estates and trusts; however, in the past 10 years I have seen a significant increase in the number of testamentary trusts set up for the benefit of my clients’ family pets,” said Mecca. “People consider their pets like family members and want to be sure their pets are well cared for in the event of a death or disability.” Mecca, a former law professor and member of the New Jersey General Assembly will address the following areas of interest and concern: . Testamentary Trusts - including in your Last Will and Testament specific provisions for the benefit of family pets . Durable Powers of Attorney - establishing a mechanism for the care of your family pet in the event you become disabled . Naming an Executor and Trustee - putting in place individuals who you and your pet trust to care for your pet in the event of your death or disability . Naming a Caregiver - selecting a veterinarian or other caregiver for your pet in the event you become disabled or pass away . Challenge to Decisions - warding off a challenge by family members and other heirs who object to your decision to provide for your pet as part of your estate planning . Other considerations of estate planning - including possible tax benefits in preparing your documents to benefit your pet Seating is limited for this event.
