Andover - The Sussex County Women’s Forum will host its second “Ladies’ Surrender to a Spa Night” from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 31, at the Barn at Hillside Park in Andover. All proceeds will support the organization’s free mammogram program. The organization, headed by Mare Galeos, was founded in April 1999 and held its first fundraiser in October 2000. “It was a 5K walk/run, now called Rota’s Rally in honor of Dr Joe Rota, who is always a huge supporter of our mission,” said Galeos. “We added an 8M trail run, and a 5M run, both held at Kittatinny Valley State Park in October and June, respectively.” The “ladies’ spa night” was added last year. Dr. Corio and Breda Drury, clinical director of the Image Care Center for Women in Sparta, have been involved in the program since it’s inception. Galeos believes the success of the program is due, in large part, to their commitment, support and encouragement of the program since it began. “This cause (mammograms available to all women) is my baby,” said Galeos. “Since the day I moved here 11 years ago, I’ve felt surrounded by women with breast cancer. I’d hear women talk about the cost, not being able to afford it or an insurance deductible being too high, or having no insurance at all,” she continued. “I decided there had to be a way to help women who are in need of this crucial diagnostic tool.” According to Galeos, 27.7 percent of women with breast cancer in New Jersey die of the disease, as opposed to 24.4 percent nationally. “Thirty percent of breast cancers could be eliminated if women over 50 got annual mammograms,” she noted. “But you know the nature of women: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’” This year’s spa night will have a beach theme, and close to 20 vendors will be available providing services and/or information. “The response for this event has been staggering,” said Galeos. “This is a night out for the ladies that will be too good to miss. You can feel the sun already! What a way to pamper yourself and shake off those winter blahs.” The evening will feature Thai massages and minifacials by Body Benefits Day Spa. Additional vendors featured will be Dawn Degroat, Lynn Colleran, Dorian Carmeci and Kelly Yawger. Yoga For You and Mis-Fit Pilates will be represented in the goodie bags each participant will receive. Tickets are $50 and include everything. Space is limited and no ticket will be sold at the door. For tickets and information, call 973-919-1373 or send e-mail to im_mare58@yahoo.com. Tickets are also available at the Sparta Stationary, Merriam Gateway Health Club, Black Bear Fitness and Andover municipal building. “Where on earth can you get facials, massages, other great services, food, drinks, and save a life — all for $50?” said Galeos.
