YMCA offers program to combat childhood obesity
Hardyston - The Sussex County YMCA has joined with Newton Memorial Hospital to help combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. The new joint program, “Healthy Kids, Healthy Families,” takes a unique approach to developing better habits by involving both the children and their parents (or caregivers) in the program. “If your child is overweight, or at risk of becoming overweight, parents are wondering what they can do to help,” said Chris Orr, registered dietician at the hospital. “This program focuses on preparing quick, healthy snacks, de-mystifying food labels and learning ways to encourage physical activity in children. In return, children learn how to make healthier food choices and to incorporate physical activity into their day.” A pilot program for 6 - 9 year olds will run from Feb. 4 to March 11. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the YMCA and will consist of part physical activity and exercise and part education on leading a healthier lifestyle. Alma Dhuyvetter, wellness director at the YMCA, said, “As childhood obesity in the U.S. reaches an all time high, we encourage parents to take advantage of this program and get children on the right track early on to avoid future health problems.” A prescription from a pediatrician is required to take part in the program.
