In support of Michael J. Schiumo

(A recent Michael Schiumo letter: www.spartaindependent.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20180313/OPINION03/180319981)
Michael’s generation shouldn’t pay any attention to being labeled by some of his elders, as being self-involved, lazy, maladjusted and incompetent. His detractors are likely the “Noisy Minority” or simply misinformed. Many in my generation were labeled by our elders, the “Silent Majority”, as subversives, anarchist, and un-American because we joined the student movement, the civil rights movement, the anti-Vietnam War movement, the women’s movement, the gay rights movement or the environmental movement. Of course that was just after the dinosaurs went extinct.
I am pleased to witness young people, like Michael, challenge the powers that be. In this case being opposed to those who advocate for Weapons of War that are manufactured and sold to efficiently kill as many people as possible and in as short a time as possible. Promoted by NRA leaders for unfettered and unregulated use on school children, after which they call for more study as if they hadn’t charged their legislative sycophants with stopping the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from studying the matter and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from tracking gun violence.
And Michael is right. The fight has just begun and I’d like to suggest, as an old propagandist, that the phrase “Gun Control” be shelved and in its stead the message should be honed as a call for “Banning Weapons of War”. Weapons that infringe upon the majority of the American people’s overriding right to expect their government to protect their domestic Tranquility, their general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty for themselves and their Posterity that is a Constitutional mandate that should not be delegated to an unregulated militia nor by arming teachers. As for the NRA leadership’s call for advance screenings of lunatics they don’t have far to look.
