Making music out of lemons

| 23 Mar 2020 | 04:36

Like thousands of my colleagues worldwide, last week, my busy 2020 schedule changed overnight: two European tours cancelled, three recordings cancelled and Broadway shutdown (I am a regular drumming sub on "Ain't Too Proud"). I was also faced with the immediate challenge to complete my Spring Semester teaching load at 3 colleges, as well as, instruct my Sparta, NJ high school students.

Online lessons to the rescue, but how? I have full 24 track home recording studio, but of course owned none of the requisite gear for online lessons. I reached out to colleagues and we collaborated. I made several recommended online purchases and in three days I was up and teaching my private drum students in Sparta with a 3 camera view (we use our feet too) and high quality audio. It was a great experience for all.

I received so many inquires nationwide from musician friends, like myself who had not taught online before, I started a FaceBook Group "Musicians OnLine Teaching Resources" and invited many professionals nationwide to share their set ups and experiences. There are many threads there with valuable advice for anyone seeking to do so.
