Morton comment dispiriting

To the Editor: I deeply resent the following comment attributed to Superintendent Morton in reference to Sparta High School, which appeared on April 28 in the Star-Ledger: “Truly, this facility is an embarrassment to the modern student.” School spirit goes beyond the physical building, and I would like him to reflect for a moment on how his statement affects the spirits of the students, teachers and staff at Sparta High. In a few short years, it seems we’ve gone from, ”It takes a little more to be a Spartan” to, “Sorry, teachers and students, but the top administrator in your district thinks your school is a cause for embarrassment, not a source of pride.” Yes, I feel that improvements to the high school are needed, but I’m asking that it be accomplished in a manner that will not destroy the morale of students and staff at Sparta High. In simple words, Dr. Morton, next time you address a public forum, please think before you speak. Mary DeMeulenaere Sparta
