Senior class president chimes in on referendum
To the Editor: I, Hannah Lowery, am an active member of Sparta High School and upcoming Senior Class President. After spending three years at Sparta High and observing numerous town presentations detailing the new school plans, I now understand both the urgencies and logistics of the referendum. The present condition of Sparta High School provides sufficient evidence of the building’s inability to sustain Sparta’s growing population of students. The dire demand for a new facility is apparent not only in the school’s physical deterioration but also in the constant difficulties that arise in daily student life. I attend Sparta High School sporting games, musical and theatrical productions, and academic activities. Although all of these programs at Sparta High are successful, they each suffer greatly from a lack of space and adequate amenities. The fields are dry and dangerous. Our auditorium houses some of the areas most impressive productions but can never seat the overwhelming crowds. Our classrooms are crowded with an excess of students and desks. This problem cannot be avoided, postponed, or ignored because the education of Sparta’s youth is at stake, not to mention property value. By approving the referendum, the ever-increasing future classes of Sparta High will be afforded a modern and spacious school building, an excellent education, and a world of new opportunities. The demand for a new and improved high school is unavoidable and imperative. Supporting the referendum means encouraging the betterment of every student’s education and ensuring that Sparta remains one of the most reputable and highly praised school districts in New Jersey.
