Sparta should combine elections to cut costs

To the Editor: I read a comment from the mayor a couple of weeks ago that the cost of running a separate election for the school board is in the area of $10,000 a pop. Our election was advertised by one candidate’s resume in your paper. With the usual number of letters and articles in your paper from citizens on the performance of the board, and a few placards set at street corners over the last week or so, incumbents and other candidates chose to operate at periscope depth. We probably got the usual turnout of 10 percent to 15 percent of voters. A good way to address school board elections would be to combine them with other elections and at the least cut out some of the cost. Edward H. Neighbour Sparta
