Time to recognize Sparta's unsung heroes'
To the Editor: My son, William, is just finishing his kindergarten year at the Sparta Alpine School. We had such an excellent experience there that I feel compelled to share it with you and with your readers. At the very beginning of the year, William’s teacher, Mrs. Quigg, noticed he was having difficulties. She met with me nine times (maybe more, I lost count) to discuss his progress. With her diligence, patience and expertise, William went from a child in September who had trouble recognizing letters to a child in May who is sounding out words and beginning to read. The Sparta Alpine School’s Vice Principal, Mr. Burn, often stands outside of the school in the morning (even on the coldest days) to greet the students, calling many of them by name. His dedication is evident. The principal, Laura Trent, sent frequent newsletters home regarding concerns and praise for the students. She has a sincere commitment to the school. The office staff, Ms. Rolph, Ms. L’Hommedieu and especially Mrs. Alessandrini (who was always pleasant and helpful no matter how busy she was) are integral and valuable. They help ensure the success of the Sparta Alpine School. I hope that you will print this letter in the Sparta Independent. It is time these excellent educators get their due in a public forum. For each parent like me who sends a letter of praise, I bet there are a hundred who feel the same, but stay silent. Congratulations to the Sparta Alpine School with the deepest thanks for starting our son’s education in such a great way! You are all “unsung” heroes! Lauren Dermody Sparta
