Wake up, Sparta taxpayers

To the Editor: Sparta will elect a new town council member on Nov. 8. The voters should be allowed to make their decision based on the issues, informed by candidates running truthful, issue-based campaigns and playing by the same set of rules. Unfortunately, some people in Sparta don’t want this to happen. Signs promoting my candidate were placed throughout the township this past Sunday and within 24 hours, two-thirds of them were stolen and replaced with opposition candidates’ signs. This was not a prank, and we take it seriously. We are filing reports with the Sparta police and with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission. Further, we have found that neither of our opponents’ signs comply with New Jersey state election laws, and are reporting that as well. Such behavior reflects poorly on a candidate whose platform calls for better cooperation in government and respect for all of Sparta’s citizens. I call on both our opposition candidates to publicly repudiate this behavior through open letters to this newspaper, and to remove their non-compliant signs. Edward M.
