The Vernon Township High School Student Council recently participated in DoSomething.org's jeans collection, Teens for Jeans, sponsored through Aeropostale.

Students and the community-at-large were invited to clean out their closets and donate jeans they no longer need, adding to the 3.5 million pairs of jeans that have been donated to DoSomething.org over the past six years.

There are more than 1. 5 million teens and children who are homeless today; those who make it to shelters frequently request that jeans be donated for three reasons: they are durable, they don't have to laundered frequently, and recipients don't feel stigmatized.

Collecting 190 pairs of jeans between Jan. 23 and Feb. 7 was one of several service learning activities VTHS Student Council has participated in this school year.

Donations were organized by Vice President Ben Anderson, Treasurer Alexis Zurbach, Kelsey Maggio, and Kristen Trezza.
