Sparta baseball looks to reclaim high-energy identity in 2026
Sparta. Returning key players and a focus on aggressive, team-first baseball set the stage for the Sparta Spartans to compete at a high level in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference and beyond this spring.
The anticipation is over and it’s time for the Sparta High School baseball program to not just perform, but once again perform well on the field and at the plate this regular season.
The Spartans are scheduled to hosted West Essex on Saturday, April 11.
“Our goal is to get back to playing Sparta baseball, an aggressive, high-energy style that puts pressure on opponents,’’ Sparta head coach Justin Matyas said. “In my first year, we stole over 100 bases and thrived with getting on base and we want to return to that identity.
“Last season injuries disrupted our momentum, but this group is better prepared to handle adversity. We expect to compete at a high level within the Division and make a strong push in both the County and (NJSIAA) State Tournaments. We embrace expectations, pressure is a privilege.’’
Key returning players include Jacob Diaz (left-handed pitcher, senior), Chris Oommen (left-handed pitcher, senior), Shane Hoover (shortstop, senior), Tim Mudrick (utility player, senior), Branden Woletz (first base, junior), Kayden Daly (outfield, junior), Greg Egger (catcher, sophomore), Julian Walsh (left-handed pitcher/first base, sophomore), Finn Kowalski (right-handed pitcher/second base, sophomore) and Grady Myhren (third base, sophomore).
“We believe leadership isn’t limited to a title,’’ Matyas said. “While some programs rely on designated captains, we emphasize that leadership can come from anyone at any time. Our team is built on the idea that the sum of our parts is greater than any one individual. We’re looking for our players to lead by mentoring younger teammates, supporting each other and consistently setting the standard for what Sparta baseball represents.
“We have a youthful team filled with a ton of sophomores who contributed last season as freshman, but we also added a few new faces: Brody Halliday (sophomore, outfield), R.J. Weyant (sophomore, outfield/left handed pitcher) and Adam Krok (freshman, outfield).’’
This season, the Spartans compete in the challenging Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) National Division.
“We lost three seniors, including two who are now playing at the collegiate level, and we certainly feel that loss,’’ Matyas said. “Especially a player like Braden Schappert, who hit over .500 and was outstanding defensively. That said, we return a strong core of talent. On the mound, we’ll rely on Jacob Diaz, Chris Oommen, and Julian Walsh, while Shane Hoover, Branden Woletz, and Greg Egger will be key contributors offensively. We believe we have the pieces in place to have a very successful season.
“The NJAC National Division is as competitive as ever. Mount Olive won the Division last season and moved to the NJAC American and we replaced them with West Morris Mendham who made it to the Section semifinals. Every team in the Division has a chance to win it as the whole Division is loaded with talent.’’
